INSIGHT: Writer Carol Cram blogs about her & Artist Gregg Simpson’s stay at Casale di Clio

Welcome!

Welcome to the website of Casale di Clio (literally, ‘the farmhouse of Clio’), where we offer rooms and facilities for Writers, Artists, Creative Folk – and for those seeking a little ‘time out’ from the hurly-burly of modern life for relaxation, reflection, regeneration and to re-charge the batteries. Situated in the Apennine Hills of Northern Tuscany, Italy, we also welcome Hikers and Lovers of Nature! Casale di Clio is our house in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, on the sunny south-facing side of Lima Valley. The house is named after the Muse Clio – see below – and is set within a small and picturesque hamlet with wonderful views of hill-top villages. We think it’s the perfect place to stay in Italy for those wanting some time for study, reflection relaxation – or just to ‘getaway’ for a while; the Casale is cosy, characterful and quirky rather than sleek and modern, as some ‘high-end’ (and much more expensive!) retreats and residencies may be. PLEASE NOTE that there are steps both outside the entrance to the house and inside the house (up one level to the bedrooms), meaning that Casale di Clio is not suitable for those with reduced mobility.

Come and explore a new creative path this Winter in Tuscany
The library has lots of resources for self-study

We offer short-term accommodation (study rooms in a characterful old house) for those wanting to be creative and/or to have time and space to reflect – particularly for those wanting to focus on literary, artistic, musical, historical, cultural or land-based endeavours. ‘Sustainable Land Use’ might appear at first to be a little incongruous, but we have an interest in the land and Permaculture, which is quite useful since in addition to the garden we have parcels of woodland that have been neglected for a little while, and a wonderfully-located parcel of partially-terraced land that we are developing as an ‘orto‘, or growing area – it is worth remembering that land and landscapes have provided inspiration in many creative disciplines!

Our Yamaha keyboard is available for experienced or would-be composers (along with self-study resources) – headphones supplied!

Come to write, draw, paint, compose your ‘musical offering’, or to study; come with a specific project to work on, or come to play with new ideas and to seek inspiration; come for respite from the stresses of modern city life – and maybe to reflect on a change in direction; come and stay in a cosy and quiet base for a hiking holiday – maybe come with no other aim than to ‘kick-back’, read, and enjoy some ‘time-out’ in a lovely environment. We hope that your stay here will, paradoxically, be both stimulating and relaxing!

Our newly finished ‘Art Barn’ is a multi-purpose studio/exhibition/teaching space

La Musa Clio

Our residence is named after the Muse Clio; she appealed to us because when the Muses were assigned specific literary and artistic spheres she was named Muse of History (and hence story-telling), with the specific role of ‘making famous’ and celebrating success! We hope that our residents will be inspired by Clio – and by the achievements of the various polymaths and creative icons that our accommodation rooms are named after: Leonardo (da Vinci), Dante (Alighieri), Hildegard (of Bingen) and Galileo (Galilei)!

Your Hosts

We are husband and wife partnership Adrian (British) and Tiziana (Italian), and we moved from the UK to Italy in late 2022. We have a breadth of experience that includes writing, organising village Art Shows, permaculture, sustainable land use and smallholding. We welcome folk to stay throughout the year – not just in Summer/High Season. Between us we speak English and Italian, and welcome those of all nationalities.

Retreat, Residence or Holiday?

We recognise the subtle differences between what might be termed ‘Retreats’, ‘Residences’ or ‘Holidays’ – all of which you will find available online for writers, artists and those with particular areas of interest or study (including local history, hiking and appreciation of the natural world and wildlife). At Casale di Clio we embrace a blurring of the lines between ‘retreats’ and ‘holidays’, offering rooms to rent while allowing guests to strike their own balance between any projects or interests that they bring, local exploration – and relaxation and reflection of course! We aim to enable you to enjoy a unique ‘getaway’ experience.

The public swimming pools at Bagni di Lucca are not too far off – and have a spectacular backdrop! The pool’s Summer 2025 opening dates are yet to be confirmed – please check these if you are hoping to visit the pools during a stay here.

Staying Here

We offer comfortable ensuite rooms (each with a desk) and what we hope is an environment that will encourage and inspire your literary, artistic, cultural or other endeavours. As well as your comfortable study-bedroom you will have access to the living room, dining room, kitchen, library, garden, and various other spots suitable for work or relaxation, including our ‘Art Barn’ – with amazing views that are likely to inspire you to take up pencil, paintbrush, pen, camera – or keyboard (computer or musical!).

Our library holds books, games and the Yamaha keyboard

Food

We offer a complimentary welcome drink and dinner on the day of arrival – after that our basic offering is a self-catering retreat; we have a well-equipped guest kitchen with allocated fridge/freezer and cupboard space, and there are friendly, well-stocked food stores and trattorias/restaurants in walking distance (see our Food Page for details). A stop at a local supermarket is included in the free pick-up from the local train station. We can fire up the BBQ in Summer, and often enjoy pizza collected from a local restaurant. Tizi is happy to demonstrate pasta making using a traditional hand-operated machine.

If self-catering does not appeal, it may be possible to have lunch and/or dinners provided at Casale di Clio (eating with the hosts), at an additional cost – please contact us if you wish to discuss this, mentioning any dietary preferences.

The main entrance to the house overlooks the internal courtyard

We focus on providing rooms for those who have a project to work on or an area of interest to study and reflect on – as well as for those who just want to relax in an atmosphere conducive to the appreciation of art, literature, history, culture and the land. We welcome and encourage autodidacts (self-directed learners) who might wish to make the most of the interesting resources in our library. Having said that, we are scheduling ‘courses weeks’ in 2025, coordinating residence dates with courses provided by various teachers/organisations – see our current ‘course week’ schedule here.

In your downtime there are various options for whiling away the time, from setting up the screen to watch a Shakespeare performance (RSC productions) to a game of Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit – or any of the other games available – with any other guests present and/or the hosts.

When we have writers, artists or other ‘creatives’ resident here – or those bringing studies/research – we encourage ‘quiet hours’ at the Casale on weekday mornings and afternoons (see Terms and Conditions). Accommodation rooms do not have televisions or radios – nor is there a television set up in shared guest spaces (we have even taken down the TV arials!). This is not a monastery, however (aperitivi on the terrace or balcony are not unheard of!); we just ask residents to respect one another’s wish to enjoy a relaxing stay here.

There is wifi internet here – although we are currently also installing (ethernet) internet sockets throughout the house.

Group Bookings

We encourage you to consider coming and residing for a week or more with like-minded folk – people who share an interested in a particular literary, artistic, historical or other creative/cultural topics; maybe you are a member of a writing circle, book club, art or photography group – or even a history group. Contact us if you would like to discuss coordinating your bookings and coming as a group with a shared interest (NB, family/friends group bookings for general holidays are NOT accepted).

New Ensuite Facilities!

During the 2024/25 close season we installed private ensuite shower/WC facilities in three of the guest rooms. We also updated the main guest bathroom, which will be used by the 4th guest bedroom, Leonardo, when this is occupied.

A ‘Quirky & Characterful’ Property!

The internal courtyard at Casale di Clio – with greenery even in the depths of Winter!

A Warm Welcome!

Our 2 wood-fired stoves provide welcome hygge from Autumn to Spring!

In Autumn 2023 we had a new heating system installed – including a five-star efficiency rated combined solar water panel and wood-fired boiler system that heats radiators and our domestic hot water. This is complemented by the similarly fuel-efficient Jotul wood-burner for the living room, and small wood-burning stove in the kitchen. This will allow us to provide comfortable accommodation for tenants whatever the time of year (extra blankets and hot water bottles are also available if it should get particularly cold early or late in the season).

Booking to Come & Stay

All while enjoying the lovely countryside, villages, footpaths, food and culture!

Our Location

Casale di Clio is in the small hill village of Vetteglia, on the sunny South-facing side of the Lima Valley – above the historic spa-town of Bagni di Lucca. Vetteglia is on the signposted Cammino di San Bartolomeo footpath that links Pieve di Controni (just a few KM down the Cammino from Vetteglia) with other local villages – and on to Pistoia, a little further afield (worth a visit in its own right); the Cammino passes directly past our front door! From San Cassiano, just a few KM up the Cammino from Vetteglia, further signposted footpaths and trails head up onto Monte Prato Fiorito (Flowery Meadow Mountain!) for great hiking with wonderful views. On a separate page we set out more reasons why we think this is the perfect location for writers’, artists’ and study retreats.

The House & Facilities

We aim to provide a welcoming and relaxing environment, especially for those engaged in creative endeavours – with ‘study and reflection spaces’, inside and outside, including a small library and ‘Art Barn’.

At Casale di Clio, in addition to your own study-bedroom (with desk), you will have access to the following:

  • living room
  • dining room
  • kitchen (with allocated fridge/freezer space)
  • your own WC/shower facilities
  • library/study room
  • ‘Art Barn’
  • balcony with a view
  • dining terrace
  • garden
  • the ‘orto’: south-facing growing area with a view!
  • woodland and mountain walks

The Casale, with its nooks and crannies – many with spectacular views – has been described as ‘like something out of The Game of Thrones’ – not familiar with the series, we hope that is a good thing! (We think it’s probably due to the ‘tunnels’/covered passageways and internal courtyard.)

Orto & Bosco

We are lucky that Casale di Clio has land: both woodland (bosco in Italian) and cultivatable land for fruit and vegetables (our orto) – and residents are welcome to explore both; indeed, the Cammino di San Bartolomeo passes through our woodland towards San Cassiano. With an interest in Sustainable Land use and Permaculture, and a background that includes setting up and running a smallholding along organic lines in the UK, we have accrued a well-stocked library of relevant books, which residents are free to study; we welcome those who might want to come and stay for a ‘land study holiday‘.

Casale di Clio has a range of flatter, terraced and sloped land – including mixed woodland, containing ‘overstood’ coppice and plenty of acacia
One of our early tasks was to start preparing an orto for food production
Our library contains classic permaculture and sustainable land use books (how many of them do you recognise?!) …
… as well as related magazines and periodicals

A Hidden Gem for Creators

Casale di Clio is a rare place where time slows and beauty fills the air. Adrian and Tizi are the ultimate hosts with pure hearts – they welcomed us with kindness, shared meals and guided us through nearby Tuscan villages. Tizi’s cooking is simply *chef's kiss* and the self-catering option made this escape very affordable.

I joined the art retreat with local artist Deenagh Miller – the experience was rich and inspiring. The "Art Barn" opened a space for creation, and our final exhibition show in the village was a highlight.

The villa is quiet, clean, and filled with Tuscan personality. Big soft beds, modern ensuite facilities, and artful touches make it feel like home. The village landscape sings with swallows, wild boars, and friendly neighbour cats & dogs.

The magic of this place is that it's not commercial but deeply personal. For writers and artists, this is a place to rest, reflect, and create. An incredible value for money and a true gift!

Thank you for such a wonderful review Nicole! It was a very special week indeed, and we are so glad that you enjoyed your time here.Very best wishes,Adrian & Tizi

Fabulous week spent creating and relaxing

Tizi and Adrian are fabulous hosts. Thinking of everything that made my stay with the two new friends I made relaxing, whilst connecting with the creativity within me. I attended the ink drawing week with Deenaugh, a lovely patient teacher, who read me well and gave me guidance when I needed it and let me be when the creative juices were flowing. We actually used many different mediums which I loved. I was very happy with my end result and the creative processes involved.

Thank you again for hosting a wonderful week. I’ll be back.

Thank you for such a lovely review Anita - we are so glad that you enjoyed your time here! And yes, we are very lucky to have Deenagh available as a teacher! Best wishes, and maybe see you again, Adrian & Tizi

Wonderful

An absolutely beautiful place to stay. The views, the rooms, the tranquility to do your own creative practice. Adrian and Tizi on hand to help at any point. This place is very special. The location and views are stunning. The local walks and sense of stillness was immediate for me. A week was like a month. Would highly highly recommend this gorgeous place if you need to step away from the rat race and enjoy time to yourself and your creativity. Thanks alot to Adrian and Tizi.

Thank you for such a lovely review Jane! We are so happy that you enjoyed Casale di Clio's magic. It was lovely having you here! Best wishes, Adrian & Tizi

Wonderful retreat spot

Casale di Clio is a beautiful p(a)lace, located in a slighly hidden and breathtaking part of Tuscany, with everything that you can wish for: stunning views, great hosts and lots of inspiration. During my stay I was very lucky that there were some wonderful guests in the house that enjoyed sharing meals and exploring the area together. Tizi and Adrian even arranged a special visit to the museum and church of a nearby town for us, which was very thoughtful of them. I refound my creativity and also enjoyed the slower Italian pace of life. Def hope to return one day!

Hi Anne, thank you for your review. Once again we had lovely guests who enjoyed their time together! We'll maybe see you again (we hope so) ... Best wishes, Adrian & Tizi

An absolute gem

I have spent one of the highest quality creative periods at Casale di Clio in a very long time. The space is clearly created by people who enjoy what they are doing and pouring love and positivity into it - The lovely Tizi and Adrian. So many beautiful details to be noticed all the time and they are managed to create an delicate balance between being available to help and guide and show, and me feeling I was in total solitude when I wanted that.

Casale di Clio is situated in the middle of natural beauty and wonderful views. It is very difficult not to be inspired being there.

I am regularly looking at my calendar to find a slot to go back again.

Thank you Mustafa, we are so glad that you enjoyed your time here, and were productive too! It was great having you here - we look forward to seeing you back here again - and good luck for the shows! Adrian & Tizi

Simply perfect

Without a doubt, there is a creative energy swirling around Casale di Clio: I wrote more in one week than I have in the last 4 years. Adrian and Tizi have thought of everything and are wonderful hosts: kind, friendly and quietly present. I'm just delighted to have found my summer writing location.

Hi Heather - thank you for your review. As I said at the station, the week that you and your fellow guests were here has come closest (as yet) to our vision of what we wanted to create: an Italian version of Charlestone, the country retreat of the Bloomsbury set! Adrian & Tizi

A Soulful Tuscan treat

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Casale di Clio. It was relaxing, inspiring and soulful. Tiziana & Adrian were impeccable hosts, allowing each guest to find their own pace and groove whilst fulfilling their own daily commitments and balancing generous hospitality. I was thrilled with my creative output achieved and was lucky enough to experience some magical moments of seasonal nature including fireflies and glow worms. Would definitely return again if the stars aligned.

Hi Sally! - thanks for a kind review. We loved having you here and hope that the stars will align so as to allow a return visit one day!Tizi and Adrian

A Place for Deep Focus and Rest

Adrian and Tiziana are incredible hosts who have created a place for deep focus and rest. Their retreat space is on a mountain overlooking a lush valley, with every window framing an incredible view. I was amazed by how perfectly quiet ad serene it was - it helped me to write without distraction during the day and get restorative sleep at night. I loved every part of my stay, from the time spent writing in different corners of the house and exploring the surrounding area during breaks, to spending time with my fellow guests and hosts in the evenings. They've really created something special here, and I look forward to going back.

Thank you so much for your lovely review Tamara! It was great having you here - and we look forward to seeing you back here one day! Adrian & Tizi

Do not hesitate if you are considering a stay here, every moment is serene and well worth the journey <3

Tranquil and Enchanting

Casale di Clio is in a breathtaking and magical part of Tuscany, in the hills above the charming town of Bagni di Lucca. As soon as I arrived, I felt a long-needed peace envelop me. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and soothing. Gazing out at the view from any window or from the jasmine-filled terrace, where I could watch the birds in flight during the day and fireflies at night, restored my spirit. I took long walks along wooded lanes and spent several focused hours daily working on my novel. I also received an excellent massage and bath in the thermal waters at Terme Bagno Bernabo`.

Tiziana and Adrian are the best hosts anyone could ask for. They were always available to meet any need and even shared a few delicious dinners. They acted as guides around the property and into Bagni di Lucca.

It was hard to leave, and I hope to return. Thank you, Tiziana and Adrian, for your generosity and friendship.

Thank you very much for such a kind review Julianne! We very much enjoyed having you stay here - and do hope to see you again! Best wishes, Adrian & Tizi
